5th Buser & Sculean International Symposium

Daniel Buser, DDS, Prof em Dr med dent, is one of the most experienced international implant surgeons, with 35 years of surgical experience. He is past professor and chairman in the Department of Oral Surgery at the University of Bern in Switzerland and past president of the European Association for Osseointegration, the Swiss Society of Oral Implantology, the Swiss Society of Oral Surgery and Stomatology, and the International Team for Implantology (ITI). He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the ITI Honorary Fellowship and the Morton Amsterdam Award. He has authored and coauthored over 400 publications and is editor of 30 Years of Guided Bone Regeneration (Quintessence, 2021), which was recently published in its third edition. Dr Buser is cofounder of the Buser & Sculean Academy, which offers continuing education courses in periodontology and implant dentistry, and lectures nationally and internationally.

Professor Nikos Donos is the Chair of Periodontology & Implant Dentistry, the Director of Clinical Research, the Head of the Centre for Oral Clinical Research and the Lead for the Centre of Oral Immunobiology & Regenerative Medicine at the Institute of Dentistry, Barts & The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). Prof. Donos is also the Director of the ITI scholarship Centre and the Director of the Osteology Research Scholarship Centre, both at QMUL. In 2009, Professor Donos has been awarded the title of Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry in Hong Kong, in 2012 the title of Adjunct Professor at the Dental School, Griffith University in Australia, in 2015 the title of Honorary Professor at UCL-Eastman Dental Institute and in 2019 the title of Honorary Professor, School of Dentistry, University of Queensland, Australia. In 2011, Professor Donos was awarded the prestigious International Association for Dental Research (IADR)-Periodontology Group Award in Periodontal Regenerative Medicine and in 2019 the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Clinical Research Award for his contribution as co-author for “outstanding published scientific manuscript with direct clinical relevance and application to the practice of periodontics”. In 2004, Professor Donos received the European Association of Osseointegration (EAO)-Basic Science Research Award. Professor Donos was the President of the British Society of Periodontology & Implant Dentistry (BSP) (2020) and is a board member at the Osteology Foundation (Switzerland) as well as the Academic Representative at the Committee of the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI)(UK). Professor Donos is involved as editorial board member in international peer-reviewed journals in the field of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry where he has published more than 240 scientific publications. Professor Donos is/has been involved in a number of consensus conferences for the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), the European Association of Osseointegration (EAO), The International Team for Implantology (ITI) and the Osteology Foundation all of which provide the most up-to-date evidence based information for different clinical situations in the fields of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. Prof Donos has significant clinical experience in providing advanced treatment modalities to patients suffering from severe periodontal disease. Those modalities include all steps (non-surgical and surgical) for the treatment of periodontal disease including periodontal and bone tissue regeneration and replacement of missing teeth with dental implants. Furthermore, Professor Donos has significant experience in non-surgical and surgical treatment of peri-implant diseases (peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis). All the above clinical problems and their treatments are topics that Professor Donos regularly covers in his lectures on a national and international level.

Dr. Sascha A. Jovanovic is considered one of the founders of guided bone regeneration (GBR). He was formally trained in periodontics at UCLA School of Dentistry, in Implant Dentistry at Loma Linda University and in Prosthodontics at University of Aachen, Germany and holds a Master of Sciences degree in Oral Biology from UCLA. He restricts his clinical work to dental implant therapy and bone & soft tissue reconstruction and is Founder and Academic Chairman of the gIDE Institute and Assistant Professor at Loma Linda University. He is the past-president of the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) and a past-Board member of the Osseointegration Foundation (OF). He is an honorary member of the South African Society of Periodontology, was the program chair of the EAO 2000 scientific congress, as well an award recipient from the American Academy of Periodontology, the California Society of Periodontists, and the German Implant Society (DGI). Dr. Jovanovic's clinical research emphasizes esthetic management in dental implant therapy and bone and soft tissue reconstruction techniques. His applied research focuses on bone regeneration with different bone graft materials, growth factors and barrier membranes as well as the biology of soft tissues around teeth and implants. He lectures extensively worldwide and has published over 65 articles and book chapters, and one textbook titled Color Atlas of Implantology (Thieme Publ.) which is translated in 8 languages. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the gIDE academic curriculum, is on several editorial boards for scientific journals and presents and teaches his implant protocols globally.

Dr. France Lambert graduated from the University of Liege in Periodontology, where she continued to obtain a PhD in the same subject. She has also completed a fellowship program in oral implantology at the prestigious Harvard School of Dental Medicine as well as the University of Washington. She is currently Head of Clinic in the Periodontology and Oral Surgery Departement at the University of Liege. Her clinical work is focused exclusively on implantology, mucogingival surgery and periodontics. Her scientific research areas target different aspects of the use of biomaterial and dental implants.

Dr. Alberto Monje obtained the certificate and Masters in Periodontology from the University of Michigan, Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine. Since them, he is certified by the American Board of Periodontics. He was the recipient of the ITI Scholarship for 2016-2017 at the University of Bern (Switzerland). Dr. Alberto Monje is PhD in the field of alveolar bone architecture granted by the University of Granada (Spain). He holds a private practice exclusive in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry (CICOM Periodoncia). He is Adjunct Professor at the Department of Periodontics of the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain), and Assistant Clinical Professor at the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, USA). Dr. Monje is Visiting Professor at the Department of Periodontology of the University of Bern (Switzerland).

Giulio Rasperini, DDS, is an associate professor of dentistry and periodontology in the Department of Biomedical, Surgical, and Dental Sciences at the University of Milan in Italy and an adjunct clinical associate professor in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine in the School of Dentistry at the University of Michigan. He serves on the editorial board for The International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry, has published and lectured extensively on periodontology and implantology, and is the recipient of several research awards. In 2017, Dr Rasperini founded the iPerio Education Center in Piacenza, Italy, with Dr Giorgio Pagni and Dr Raffaele Acunzo.

Giovanni E. Salvi received his license in dental medicine in 1988 from the medical faculty of the University of Bern, Switzerland. In 1990 he received his „Dr. med. dent“ degree. Between 1992 and 1994 he was a graduate student in the Department of Periodontology and Fixed Prosthodontics at the University of Bern. From 1994 to 1997 he was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC, USA. In 1998 he became a board certified periodontist. Since 1999 he is a fellow of the International Team of Implantology (ITI). In 2005 he was appointed teacher of the year in the School of Dental Medicine. Since 2003 he is a member of the editorial board of Journal of Clinical Periodontology and Clinical Oral Implants Research. In 2006 he was appointed associate editor of Clinical Oral Implants Research. Currently he is an associate professor in the Department of Periodontology and director of the graduate program in periodontology at the University of Bern.

Markus Schlee is an accomplished periodontist and implantologist based in Forchheim, Germany since 1990. With specialist qualifications and active involvement in various professional associations, he is a recognized expert in the fields of periodontology, implantology, esthetics and implant health. Markus Schlee also holds an external professorship at Goethe University and delivers lectures at prestigious institutions such as Goethe University (MOI), Steinbeis University (DGI), Dresden International University (DGP), and University of Greifswald (DGÄZ).

Frank Schwarz is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oral Surgery and Implantology at the Centre for Dentistry and Oral Medicine (Carolinum), Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt, Germany. He serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Clinical Periodontology and Editorial Board Member for Periodontology 2000, Clinical Oral Implants Research and Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research. He is a Member of the Board of Directors of the European Association for Osseointegration – EAO, Executive Board Member of the Osteology Foundation, and Past President of the German Association of Oral Implantology (DGI). He was awarded the André Schröder Research Prize in 2007, the Miller Research Prize in 2012 and the Jan Lindhe Award in 2017.

Anton Sculean is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Periodontology and currently the Head of the Dental Research Center (DRC) of the School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland. Prof. Sculean has authored more than 470 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 35 chapters in periodontal textbooks and has delivered more than 600 lectures at national and international meetings. He is Past President of the Periodontal Research Group of the IADR, of the Swiss Society of Periodontology, of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and of the International Academy of Periodontology (IAP). Professor Sculean is currently listed as the top-rated expert in Periodontics in the world https://www.expertscape.com/ex/periodontics.His research interests focus on periodontal wound healing and regeneration, regenerative and plastic-esthetic periodontal surgery, use of antibiotics, antiseptics and novel approaches such as lasers and photodynamic therapy in the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant infections.

Shakeel Shahdad is a Consultant and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at The Royal London Dental Hospital, and Barts & The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is the Lead for postgraduate implant training. He is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology, the current Chairman of the ITI UK & Ireland Section, and a Diplomate of The British Society of Oral Implantology. He is also the Immediate Past Chairman for the Advisory Board in Implant Dentistry for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is a specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Endodontics. Apart from the specialist restorative treatment, his areas of particular interest include aesthetic implant dentistry and management of complex restorative cases including functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of patients with hypodontia and toothwear. Shakeel specialises in treating patients requiring complex and advanced restorative treatment including surgical placement and restoration with dental implants. He is active in clinical research and has secured various research grants. He is a co-author of a textbook in periodontology and implant dentistry, besides publishing in peer-reviewed journals. He also runs a multi-specialist referral practice in the West End of London.

After having completed his dental technology education, Andrea Stavropoulos studied dentistry in Heidelberg, Germany, Thessaloniki and Athens, Greece. After a few years of work in private practice limited to periodontics and implant dentistry, he joined the Department of Periodontology, School of Dentistry, Aarhus University, Denmark, where he received his postgraduate training. Andreas Stavropoulos received his Ph.D. in 2002 and his dr.odont. degree in 2011 from Aarhus University, based on studies on guided tissue regeneration and bone substitute materials for the treatment of advanced periodontal defects. Andreas Stavropoulos has also performed preclinical and clinical studies on the use of bone biomaterials in association with dental implants. In 2012, Andreas Stavropoulos joined Malmö University as the Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontology. Andreas Stavropoulos has received several awards for his research, including the Anthony Rizzo Young Investigator Award from the Periodontal Research Group (PRG) of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) in2006, the 1st Basic Research Prize of the European Association of Osseointegration in 2011, the Straumann Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine, conferred by the PRG of the IADR. Andreas Stavropoulos has authored several publications in international peer reviewed journals and book chapters, and he is member of the Editorial Boards of Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Clinical Oral Implants Research, and Quintessence International, and also serves as adhoc reviewer for several other scientific journals. Andreas Stavropoulos is a member of the European Federation of Periodontology, the European Association of Osseointegration, the International Team for Implantology, and he is currently the Secretary of the PRG of IADR.

Dr. Stefanini is a researcher in the Department of Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences at Bologna University, Italy and also a dental surgeon in private practice. She graduated from the University of Bologna with a degree in dentistry in 2005. She was awarded a PhD in Medical Sciences in 2016 from the same institution. Dr. Stefanini is an ITI Fellow, has sat on of the Editorial and the Scientific Committees of the Italian Society of Periodontology and continues to be an active member. She was a Visiting Professor at San Raffaele University Milan in 2015-2016 and taught a postgraduate program at the Dental School San Raffaele, University Milan and for the II level International Master at Bologna University in 2017. Dr. Stefanini is an expert in periodontology and has authored several publications in Pubmed, as well as speaking at national and international conferences on periodontology.

Dr. Steigmann is an internationally known speaker and author. He is Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at University of Michigan Dpt. of Periodontics and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Boston University (oral and maxillofacial surgery) and University of Pennsylvania (Dpt. of Endodontics). He is the founder and Scientific chairman of "Update Implantologie Heidelberg" 2002-2011 and the founder and director of the "Steigmann Institute". Dr. Steigmann received the medal of "Semmelweiss" Budapest University Dental School, Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. He is member of several associations (such as DGOI, FIZ, BDIZ und ICOI) and diplomate of the ICOI and other European societies.

Leonardo Trombelli is a full professor and chair of the Department of Periodontology, School of Dentistry at the University of Ferrara. He has served as the director of the Research Center for the Study of Periodontal and Peri-implant Diseases at the University of Ferrara and the director of the Dental Clinic, University Hospital, Ferrara. He has been the dean of the Dental School at the University of Ferrara since 2013. He also served as the president of the Medical School at the University of Ferrara from 2014 to 2016. Past president of the SIO from 2007 to 2009. Dr Trombelli is an active member of SIdP and an editorial board member for the Journal of Clinical Periodontology.

Istvan Urban, DMD, MD, PhD, teaches implant dentistry in the graduate program at Loma Linda University in California and is also an adjunct clinical associate professor in the Department of Periodontology and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan. He has published widely on bone regeneration and soft tissue reconstructive surgery around dental implants and is the author of the textbooks Vertical and Horizontal Ridge Augmentation: New Perspectives (Quintessence, 2017) and Vertical 2: The Next Level of Hard and Soft Tissue Augmentation (2022). Dr Urban is licensed in the state of California and maintains a private practice in Budapest, Hungary.

Winner of various awards in Europe and the United States for scientific research in the field of periodontology. Co-author of two illustrated textbooks on periodontal plastic surgery (Ed. Martina) and of the chapter “Mucogingival Therapy—Periodontal Plastic Surgery” in Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (Lindhe J, Lang NP, Karring T [eds]; Wiley-Blackwell). Author of the book Mucogingival Esthetic Surgery, published by Quintessence Publishing and translated into 12 languages. Speaker at major Italian and international conferences on the topics of periodontics and implantology.
