Purpose: The aim of this in-vitro study was to investigate the antimicrobial efficacy of identical experimental toothpastes with different stannous sources. Materials and Methods:Streptococcus mutans biofilms were grown on protein-coated glass disks in static conditions for 24 h and thereafter exposed to toothpaste slurries or physiological saline (negative control; n = 15) for 30 s. Four experimental toothpastes were applied in this study, containing either stannous chloride (SnCl2; B: 3500 ppm Sn2+, and D: 3600 ppm Sn2+) or stannous fluoride (SnF2; C: 3500 ppm Sn2+, and E: 3600 ppm Sn2+). Marketed toothpaste meridol® (A: 3300 ppm SnF2) served as control. All five toothpastes contained amine fluoride (AmF). The biofilms were placed on agar surface and their metabolic activity was assessed by isothermal microcalorimetry over 96 h. The heat flow data was analysed for growth rate and lag time using grofit package in software R. Additionally, reduction of active biofilm compared to untreated control was calculated. Results: All toothpastes significantly prolong the lag time of treated biofilms in comparison to negative control (p < 0.05). Toothpastes containing SnF2 (C and E) prolonged the lag time statistically significantly compared to toothpastes containing SnCl2 (B and D) (p < 0.05). The maximum growth rate was statistically significantly reduced by all tested toothpastes compared to the untreated control group (p < 0.05). Toothpastes containing SnF2 (A, C and E) reached 59.9 ± 7.8, 61.9 ± 7.7, and 55.6 ± 7.0% reduction of active biofilm, respectively. Thus, they exhibit statistically significantly better results than toothpastes B (52.9 ± 9.9%) and D (44.7 ± 7.6%). Toothpaste D, which contains a slightly higher concentration of Sn2+, was the least effective in reducing active biofilm. Conclusion: The toothpastes containing SnF2 combined with AmF had the highest antimicrobial efficacy in this study. Eine allogene hämatopoetische Stammzelltransplantation kann beispielsweise bei akuten und chronischen Leukämien, bei bestimmten Non-Hodgkin-Lymphomen (z. B. multiples Myelom) und nach vorangegangener Chemo- und Strahlentherapie sowie auch bei hämatopoetischer Insuffizienz nichtmaligner Genese (z. B. schwere aplastische Anämie) nötig werden. Als Komplikation kann die Graft-versus-Host-Erkrankung (GvHE) auftreten, wobei zwischen einer akuten und einer chronischen Form unterschieden wird. Bei der akuten GvHE ist selten nur die orale Schleimhaut betroffen. Hier stehen klinisch Organmanifestationen im Vordergrund. Es zeigen sich ausgedehnte, sehr schmerzhafte und unregelmäßige Erytheme und erosiv-ulzerative Effloreszenzen. Lichenoide Effloreszenzen sind seltener. Bei der chronischen GvHE sind lichenoide Veränderungen hingegen charakteristisch. Des Weiteren sind Symptome wie Xerostomie, Schluckbeschwerden sowie Hypogeusie, Ageusie oder Dysgeusie häufig. Für die Diagnose einer chronischen GvHE muss ein eindeutiges klinisch-diagnostisches Erscheinungsbild vorliegen, welches allenfalls durch eine histopathologische Untersuchung weiter abgeklärt wird. Je nach Schweregrad und Leidensdruck sowie möglicher Organbeteiligungen wird topisch und/oder systemisch behandelt. Wichtig sind auch unterstützende Maßnahmen bezüglich Ernährung, Schmerztherapie und antiinfektiöser Therapien. Die Entwicklung von immunsuppressiv wirkenden Medikamenten erlaubte Fortschritte bei der Behandlung chronisch entzündlicher Erkrankungen und in der Transplantationsmedizin. Entsprechend werden Immunsuppressiva in der Bevölkerung vermehrt eingesetzt. Nicht zuletzt aufgrund der demographischen Entwicklung kommen auch Zahnmediziner immer häufiger in Kontakt mit immunsupprimierten Patienten. Basis für eine adäquate zahnärztliche Prophylaxe und Therapie sind detaillierte Kenntnisse über mögliche orale Veränderungen, die im Zusammenhang mit Immunsuppression auftreten können. Mundgeruch ist nicht zuletzt wegen seines kompromittierenden Einflusses auf das Arbeits- und Sozialleben von allgemeinem Interesse. Nach Literaturangaben klagen etwa 20 bis 25 % der Bevölkerung über gelegentlichen Mundgeruch, und ca. 6 % leiden dauernd in unterschiedlicher Ausprägung darunter. Die Ursachen sind zu etwa 85 % im Mundhöhlenbereich zu suchen und weniger - wie früher angenommen - im Bereich Magen-Darm- oder Stoffwechselerkrankungen. Der Beitrag beleuchtet zur Thematik Halitosis die mikrobiologischen Aspekte, deren Bedeutung lange unterschätzt wurde, und diskutiert kurz die kausale Therapie sowie den Stand der probiotischen Behandlung. Fokussuchen können entweder zur Identifikation einer Primärerkrankung im Rahmen einer Ursachenforschung bei Sekundärerkrankungen unklarere Genese oder aber im Zusammenhang mit bevorstehenden Operationen, Bestrahlungen und Organtransplantationen durchgeführt werden. Nicht jede Parodontitis apicalis heilt nach einer endodontischen Behandlung vollständig aus; die Infektion des Wurzelkanalsystems und die periapikale Läsion können trotz einer Behandlung über Monate und Jahre persistieren. Für solche Fehlschläge können zahlreiche Faktoren verantwortlich sein, wobei die meisten mit Problemen der chemomechanischen Präparation des endodontischen Systems zusammenhängen. Es können aber auch Mikroorganismen vorhanden sein, die herkömmlichen Maßnahmen gegenüber therapieresistent sind. Der Literatur über die Mikrobiologie persistierender Infektionen zufolge werden in solchen Fällen einige bestimmte Spezies häufiger angetroffen, darunter aus der E.-faecalis-/-faecium-Gruppe enterische gramnegative fakultative Stäbchen, das heißt Kolibakterien und Pseudomonas-Spezies. Seit einiger Zeit wird auch eine Therapieresistenz von Pilzen bei endodontischen Infektionen diskutiert. Die folgende Übersicht stellt eine Zusammenstellung eigener Publikationen und früherer Übersichtsartikel dar und soll den gegenwärtigen Wissensstand über das Auftreten von Hefepilzen im Wurzelkanal zusammenfassen. Außerdem werden die Faktoren beleuchtet, die für die Pathogenität und das Überleben dieser Mikroorganismen unter den extremen ökologischen Bedingungen des infizierten endodontischen Systems bedeutsam sind. To study the dentin disinfecting capacity of glutaraldehyde-containing bonding agents. Uniformly sized bovine dentin blocks infected with Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 were treated according to manufacturer's instructions with a three-step bonding system (Syntac Classic), its single components, or Gluma Primer. Bacterial growth from dentinal filings obtained immediately after application of the bonding agents was assessed at different dentin depths. Minimal inhibitory concentration and minimal bactericidal concentration of glutaraldehyde against E. faecalis were determined. Both Gluma Primer and Syntac Adhesive disinfected dentin, while the other components failed to do so. This was explained by the high antibacterial efficacy of glutaraldehyde even at low concentrations. Applied in consecutive order, the Syntac bonding system disinfected dentin blocks equally well with or without previous application of Gluma Primer. Under the conditions of the current study, bonding agents containing glutaraldehyde appear to be good dentin disinfectants compatible with bonding systems. Purpose: The aim of this in vitro study was to examine the adherence of yeasts to newly polymerized and water-stored denture base polymers using four Candidastrains with different cell surface hydrophobicities. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two autopolymerized denture base polymer specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 7 days and 32 were newly polymerized. Sixteen specimens of each group were pretreated with unstimulated mixed saliva (saliva group), and 16 were pretreated with phosphate-buffered saline ([PBS] PBS group) at 37°C for 1 hour. Hydrophobicity of the newly polymerized and water-stored specimen surfaces was determined by contact angle measurements. C guilliermondii, C albicans, C glabrata,and C tropicaliswere grown on tryptic soy agar. They were pretreated either with saliva or PBS and suspended in PBS. Four parallel test specimens were incubated without agitation in each yeast suspension at 37°C for 1 hour, washed, and allowed to dry in air. Adherent cells were fixed, gram stained, and counted from 10 high-power light-microscopy fields of each specimen. Results: Enhanced adherence of yeasts was observed in water-stored test specimens in comparison to newly polymerized test specimens. Salivary pellicle reduced the hydrophobicity of test specimens and the adherence of yeasts. No differences in contact angles of distilled water between newly polymerized and water-stored polymers were observed. Conclusion: Yeasts seem to adhere less to newly polymerized than waterstored denture base polymer. This may be due to the release of residual monomer from the newly polymerized material.
