Many clinicians are of the opinion that endodontically treated teeth do not serve as well as vital teeth. This article reviews the pertinent literature and seeks to reach a consensus for the use of endodontically treated teeth with each type of prosthesis. With appropriate preparation designs, endodontically treated teeth can serve well as abutments for crowns. As restorations become more complex and involve edentulous spans, some reservations apply. In some fixed partial denture designs, the use of endodontically treated teeth may be contraindicated.
