This paper discusses the current and prospective applications of artificial intelligence in the field of orthodontics in the near and not-too-distant future. The term Orthodontics 4.0 is used to define a new paradigm in diagnostic and treatment planning that will use data mining, algorithms, and neural networks to better predict treatment outcomes rather than depending exclusively on the practitioner’s experience.The utilisation of three-dimensional digital datasets that can be quickly uploaded into machine learning models utilising cloud computing has revolutionised data mining in orthodontics and enabled the creation of a virtual patient. This patient may now be investigated scientifically and mathematically, and multiple simulations can be created with pinpoint accuracy. This technology is still in its early stages, but progress is rapid, and the efficiency of use of these complex algorithms improves by the day, to the point where AI is now commonly used in dentistry for treatment prediction and simulation.This review is intended to inform clinical orthodontists on the possible applications of these cutting-edge technologies and inform clinicians about these strategies to improve patient outcomes.
